In the last couple of decades, Malayalees in the Greater Austin area have organized several community events. As the strength of the Malayalee community grew over the years, it became increasingly clear that a formal organization was necessary to conduct these events. During the Christmas meeting of 2004, Mr. Thomas Cherian (Thampachen) took the initiative in recruiting several volunteers to form such an organization.
Greater Austin Malayalee Association (GAMA) was officially formed on March 8, 2005. After a few years, due to the commendable efforts of the Board of 2016, GAMA was certified as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. This was a major milestone in GAMA’s history.
